Hydrocyclone Experimental Results

The following experiment dramatically illustrates a ChemIndustrial Hydrocyclone's ability to separate iron powder from sample process liquid.

Experimental conditions

Mix vessel
One (1) cone-bottom polyethylene tank, nominal capacity = 15 gal

Recirculating pump
One (1) 1.5 HP centrifugal pump. ChemIndustrial's standard 3500 RPM horizontal water pump running at a working point of 24 gpm at 95 feet of head. This was the working point that resulted from using that particular pump with the arranged recirculation path.

Separator
One (1) ChemIndustrial 3" diameter hydrocyclone with two body segments, 3/4" adjustable top outlet (adjusted to 4.0" from the inside of the hydrocyclone cap) and 1" bottom outlet

Hoses
#1: Mix vessel bottom outlet to pump inlet at 1"
#2: Pump discharge to Hydrocyclone inlet at 1"
#3: Hydrocyclone top outlet to mix vessel lid opening at 1"
#4: Hydrocyclone bottom outlet to mix vessel lid opening at 1"

Arrangement
The hydrocyclone was mounted vertically above the mix vessel. The discharge from Hose 3 and Hose 4 was available for visual inspection and sampling at the mix vessel lid opening.

Iron powder
Hoeganaes Corporation Ancor 80SC150 iron sponge powder (particle size distribution 100%, <150 microns)

Iron powder/water mixture
2 pounds of the powder mixed into 6 gallons of water in the cone-bottom mix vessel. The material was added while water recirculation was underway and was mixed uniformly due to the high recirculating rate.

Valves
Full port ball valves were available at hoses 1, 3 and 4. In practice, all valves except the one in hose 4 were wide open during the test. The valve in hose 4 was used to throttle flow.

Separated iron powder from hydroclone outlet

Figure 3: The hydrocyclone top outlet (hose #3) is seen above the Hydrocyclone bottom outlet (hose #4) in this image. The high concentration of separated iron powder exiting the bottom outlet gives the liquid a dramatic black color.

The photo above was taken a few minutes after the start of the test. The separation efficiency was approximately equal for the 30 minute duration of the test.
